When Bindiya was just 14 years old, she was discovered by Superstar Hema Malini's mother at a party, who felt there was a resemblance to Hema and so recommended Bindiya's name to film producers who soon cast her in hit films.

The money she was making from acting in films allowed her to buy a Mercedes when she was just 15 years old and moved into her own flat when she turned 16.

Her first husband was her frequent leading man Vinod Mehra, but the marriage dissolved quickly, partly because of family tensions.

Even though, she acted in memorable films, usually for Basu Chatterji such as "Khatta Meeta" (1977) and "Prem Vivah" (1979), as well as Hrishikesh Mukherjee's big hit "Golmaal" (1979), and Ramesh Sippy's "Shaan" (1980), she gave up acting to marry her second husband, director J.P. Dutta, with whom she has two daughters, Nidi and Siddhi.

She currently creates the costumes for female stars, such as Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor, for her husband J.P. Dutta's films, such as "Border," "Refugee," and "LOC."

She was born on August 8, 1961 in Mumbai, India. The actress first wed actor Vinod Mehra who was already wed to Meena Broca. Bindiya later wed well known director J.P. Dutta and the couple had two daughters, Nidi and Siddhi.

Films

Hema Malini's mother discovered Bindiya in one of the parties and introduced her to the producers. The lady got her first break with Jeevan Jyothi (1976) opposite Vijay Arora. Bindiya was noticed after appearing in films like Khatta Meetha (1977) and Prem Vivah (1979) by Basu Chatterjee.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Golmaal (1979) was her biggest hit. She was paired with Amol Palekar in this comedy flick.

The actress replaced superstar Hema Malini in Shaan (1980). This Ramesh Sippy film was a big hit and starred superstars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Raakhee Gulzar, Parveen Babi, and more. Chor Police (1983),Avinash (1986), Vishaal (1987), and Mera Yaar Mera Dushman (1987) are some of her last few films.

Designer

Bindiya worked as a costume designer for some of her husband's films like Border (1997), Refugee (2000), and LOC Kargil (2003). She designed clothes for actresses like Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee.
